The experience
Baños sits in a valley carved by the San Martin river, and the canyon walls are volcanic basalt: the best climbing rock in Ecuador. You get picked up at 9:00am or 2:30pm from your hotel, then driven ten minutes to the climbing site. A certified guide meets you there and walks through safety, equipment and climbing basics before you tie in.
The four-hour climbing window is the core of the day. The rock walls suit climbers of almost any age and experience level. The guide sets routes that match what you can do. You'll wear a helmet, harness and climbing shoes, clip into ropes and work your way up the basalt. The guide manages the belay and the safety checks, so your job is to climb, rest when you need to, and climb again. Chalk, tape and all the gear stay with the guide. You bring only water, sunscreen and insect repellent.
After four hours on the wall, you head back to town. The whole outing (pickup, safety talk, climbing and return) fits inside a half day, leaving your morning or afternoon free depending on which departure you choose.
