itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Adventure circuit in Pastaza Canyon

  • Zip line into basalt cave
  • Walk 90-meter Tibetan bridge
  • Climb 90-meter via ferrata
  • Finish with 350-meter canopy line

I didn’t think I’d ever fly straight into a cave, but that’s how our day started in Baños. The guide, Andrés, checked my harness twice—he even winked when I asked if people ever chicken out. The zipline shot us across the canyon so fast my eyes watered, and then suddenly it went dark and cool as we zipped through this basalt cave right inside the Pastaza Canyon. It smelled damp and earthy for a second. My hands were shaking when I landed (not sure if from nerves or excitement), but everyone was grinning at each other like we’d just shared some secret.

After that came the Tibetan bridge. Ninety meters long and honestly, it wobbled more than I expected. You could hear the river below—loud, like it was laughing at us—and see all the way down to where mist curled up from the water. Andrés told us locals call this spot “the breath of San Martin” because of the way the fog moves through the canyon in the mornings. Someone behind me started singing quietly to distract themselves; it actually helped.

The via ferrata was next—metal steps hammered right into the rock face. My legs felt weirdly rubbery by then, but clipping into those safety lines gave me some confidence back. There’s something about feeling real stone under your hands while you climb that makes you forget you’re scared for a minute. We finished with another canopy line—this one shorter, and you can go solo or double (I went with my friend because my knees were still jelly). The van ride back to Baños was mostly quiet except for someone snoring softly in the back seat. I keep thinking about that first moment in the cave—how alive it all felt.
