The experience

The first thing I noticed when we met up at the office was the buzz of nervous excitement. Everyone checking their harnesses, swapping stories about past climbs or, for some of us, admitting it was our first time. The guides were patient, making sure our helmets fit right and that nobody left with shoes too tight (I had to swap mine for a half size up, glad I tried them on the day before like they suggested). You’ll want to show up early. Mornings in Baños are cool and a bit misty, but by 9 am the sun starts peeking through.

After a short drive out of town (windows down, you catch that earthy smell from last night’s rain), we reached the lava rock wall. It’s not far, maybe 15 minutes tops. Our guide, Diego, walked us through safety basics and gave some quick tips on handholds. For beginners, there’s no pressure. Climbs stay low to the ground with a top-rope setup so you can always come down if you need to. If you’ve climbed before, there are tougher routes with multi-pitch options: Diego checked everyone’s belay skills before letting us try those. The rock itself is rough and warm under your hands once the sun hits it. You hear birds overhead and sometimes a distant shout from another group celebrating a tricky move.
