The experience
How do you get to the canyons? You meet at the Ivagatours office in Baños where your guide fits you with a wetsuit, helmet, harness and canyoning shoes, then drives ten minutes to Chamana. A five-minute walk up the hill gets you to the start of the canyon system. From there you spend roughly an hour and a half moving through the water and rock: rappelling where the canyon drops, swimming where it opens, climbing where the walls allow it. The guide leads the whole time and manages the rope work, so you focus on the movement itself.
The group stays small by design: minimum two people, maximum six. That means you're not waiting for a line to form at each rappel or swimming in a crowd. Your guide carries international certification and the operation follows international safety standards. Once you're done, you change back into dry clothes at the office and head into town.
