Step-by-step itinerary
Cocoa farm visit and chocolate making

- Drive 45-60 minutes to cocoa farm
- Walk through cocoa plantations
- Learn about cocoa trees and harvesting
- Harvest a cocoa pod
- Make chocolate from cocoa beans
The experience
The farm sits about 45 minutes to an hour outside Guayaquil in rural Ecuador. Your guide picks you up at your hotel and drives you out to the small family operation where the real work begins. You walk through the plantations to see how the cocoa trees grow, learn what makes the beans ready to harvest, and actually cut a pod from the tree yourself: the moment most people come for, since it's the only time they'll ever do it.
After the farm tour, you move into the workspace to make chocolate from the beans you've just seen harvested. You'll process them through the steps that turn raw cocoa into the finished product: fermentation, roasting, grinding, tempering. It's hands-on work, not a demonstration you watch from the side. Lunch is included, and by the end of the morning you leave with chocolate you made yourself and a much clearer picture of where it actually comes from.
The guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese and stays with the group the whole time. This is a shared tour, so you'll have other travelers with you, typically a small group on a farm visit like this. If you're traveling with children, they can come along. Infants can ride in a stroller through the farm paths, and kids old enough to help with the chocolate-making usually do.

Is this one for you?You do the chocolate-making yourself rather than watching a demo, so it suits anyone who wants to leave with something they actually made. The shared-group format keeps the cost down and works well for solo travelers or small groups who don't mind company. If you prefer privacy, this tour runs as a shared experience only.
