The experience

Hacienda Cacaoymango is a family farm built around chocolate-making and the crops that grow on its land. The day starts with a welcome drink, then moves through the working property where coffee, vanilla, rice and around 50 tropical fruits grow. You taste each one and learn how it's processed, from plant to harvest to what lands on the plate. A bilingual guide walks you through the farm, naming what you're standing in front of and explaining the work that goes into it.

In Alberto's chocolate workshop, you prepare artisanal chocolate yourself, decorating it with dehydrated fruits to your liking. Before that, chef Jamil serves a three-course lunch (starter, main and dessert), made from ingredients grown on the hacienda. The meal sits at the center of the day, breaking up the morning's tasting and the afternoon's hands-on work.

After lunch, the tour moves to Cerro Pereque Chico in the Churute Mangroves reserve, where some of the region's largest vanilla crops grow in greenhouses. You walk through the growing operation with experts who show you cultivation, harvesting, fermentation treatment and drying: the steps that turn a vanilla plant into the spice. Hotel pickup and drop-off bracket the whole day, and private transportation connects each site.

Is this one for you?You make the chocolate and taste the fruits yourself rather than watching a demonstration, so the day works best for travelers who want hands-on involvement with what they're learning. The full itinerary (farm walk, tasting, lunch, chocolate workshop, vanilla greenhouses) suits a full morning and afternoon. A shorter visit won't fit all of it.
