The experience
You start at 7am from your hotel in Guayaquil and drive two hours to Bucay, climbing by car to 4,200 feet where the cloud forest begins. The landscape shifts as you gain elevation: rivers, waterfalls and dense vegetation come into view. Once you reach the canyon inside the forest, your guide walks you through the technique and safety protocols before you tackle the first waterfall, a 30-meter descent by abseiling. The second is steeper at 45 meters, then you move through a 20-meter drop and finish with a 10-meter slide into a mountain pool.
Between waterfalls you walk the river itself, sometimes swimming through sections, sometimes scrambling over rock. The canyon stays inside the forest canopy, so the water runs clear and cold. After the final waterfall you change out of your wetsuit and head back down the mountain, arriving at your hotel around 6pm. Lunch at a local restaurant happens after you've finished the canyon work, so you eat when you're ready to sit still.
The guide speaks English or Spanish, and the trip is built for small groups. Just your party and the professional. All the gear comes with you: wetsuits, helmets, harnesses, carabiners and ropes are provided, so you show up with nothing but a change of clothes and a willingness to get wet.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 16 years); Child (9 to 11 years). Children under 9 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. No refund if you cancel.
How hard is canyoning if I've never done it before?
The cloud forest canyon is designed for people with moderate fitness who are comfortable in water and on steep terrain. Your guide teaches you abseiling technique at the start, and the four waterfalls increase in difficulty. You begin with the 30-meter drop and work up to the 45-meter one. Children from age 9 can join if they're comfortable swimming and following instructions.
What's the difference between abseiling down a waterfall and just jumping or sliding?
Abseiling means you control your descent using a rope and harness, which keeps you safe on the steeper drops like the 45-meter waterfall. On the smaller ones and the natural slides, you may swim or slide, but the rope work on the big ones is what makes the canyon passable without risk.
Do I need to know how to swim to do this?
Yes, you'll swim between waterfalls and in the mountain pools, so basic swimming ability is necessary. The guide stays with your group throughout, but you need to be comfortable in water.
What happens if the weather turns bad during the day?
The canyon runs year-round, but heavy rain can make the water level rise and the rocks slippery. Your guide assesses conditions on the morning of your trip and will adjust the route or reschedule if safety is at risk.
Is the 10-hour day mostly canyoning, or is a lot of it driving and waiting?
The two-hour drive each way accounts for four hours. The remaining six hours cover the climb to the canyon, the four waterfall descents, walking between them, changing clothes and lunch. Most of the middle of the day is spent in the canyon itself.
