The experience
The day starts at Derynia village, where the guide introduces the history of Famagusta and the Varoshia tourist area before the 1974 Turkish invasion. From there you drive toward the checkpoint that marks the green line dividing the island. After crossing, you enter the occupied north and pass the ghost city (a restricted area where visitors cannot enter), then explore the old city itself with its Venetian walls, the Othello Tower, and shops and cafes where you can wander or rest.
In the afternoon, the tour shifts from land to sea. You board a cruise boat at one of the eastern beaches and sail along the coastline, passing coves and sea caves before reaching the Blue Lagoon, famous for its clear water. Here you swim or snorkel (snorkeling equipment is provided free on board), and the boat makes a second swimming stop along the way. A chef-prepared lunch and a complimentary local drink are served on board during the cruise. Note that guiding ends once you board the boat. The cruise itself is unguided.
Full guidance happens only at the Famagusta Viewpoint before entering the north. The jeep has no air conditioning, so bring sun protection, a hat, sunglasses, swimwear and a towel. A valid passport or European ID card is required to cross the checkpoint. If severe weather or circumstances beyond the operator's control cancel the boat trip and lunch portion, you receive compensation of €25 per adult and €15 per child.
