The experience
The day starts at the pier and moves quickly: a drive along the coast takes you to a dock in Moin, where you board a pontoon boat for the Tortuguero Canal. The canal is narrow and slow-moving, lined with rainforest on both sides. You watch for sloths hanging in the trees, monkeys moving through the canopy, crocodiles and caimans in the water, basilisk lizards, orchids, water lilies and birds. After the boat tour ends, you get a serving of local tropical fruits before heading back to the vehicle.
The zipline section is the centerpiece: you drive up the mountain into the jungle, then clip into the harness for 12 cables strung between 14 platforms high above the forest floor. The cables run through the rainforest canopy, and the activity is designed to be educational as well as thrilling. The guide explains the ecosystem as you move through it. After ziplining, you walk through a botanical learning area where you see how bananas, chocolate, coffee and pineapple are grown, with time for souvenir shopping. A local snack follows before a short guided tour of downtown Limon's Caribbean streets and history. Private transportation brings you back to the cruise ship port to finish the day.
The full day runs about seven hours from start to finish. You'll need at least a moderate level of physical fitness for the ziplining and the walking sections. An air-conditioned vehicle handles all transport, and bottled water is provided throughout.
