Step-by-step itinerary

Explore park, culture, waterfall swim

  • Walk Cahuita National Park with guide
  • Search for wildlife in the park
  • Visit Bribri community and learn culture
  • Make traditional organic chocolate
  • Enjoy traditional lunch with locals
  • Walk to waterfall and swim
  • Have tropical snack by waterfall

The experience

The day starts at a waterfall a short walk from the road. A ten-minute trail brings you to the falls, where you can swim in the pool or stand in the landscape before a tropical snack of fresh fruit and coconut water sets the rhythm for what follows.

Cahuita National Park comes next. Your naturalist guide enters with you and spends roughly two hours moving through the humid forest, stopping to point out the animals that live there: monkeys, sloths, raccoons, snakes, iguanas, river turtles and more. The guide's job is spotting. Yours is watching and listening as the forest opens up. You'll also walk the beach inside the park and feel the sea breeze before leaving.

The Bribri community visit is where the tour shifts from watching to doing. Your guide, a descendant of the Duriwak clan, brings you to a local family's home to learn about Bribri history, language and way of life over roughly two hours. Part of that time goes to making chocolate. You grind and mix it yourself, learning the traditional method before eating what you've made. Lunch follows, cooked with local ingredients and eaten with the family. A final walk of about ten minutes takes you back to the waterfall for a swim and another tropical snack before the day ends.
