Step-by-step itinerary
Bribri culture, waterfall, and park walk
- Visit local fruit stand and taste fruits
- Explore Bribri village and learn chocolate making
- Swim and relax at natural waterfall pools
- Hike 2 km trail in Cahuita National Park
The experience
The day opens at a local fruit stand where you taste fresh tropical fruit (pineapple, papaya, mini bananas, platanitos, watermelon), and sip complimentary coconut water and local coffee. A small souvenir shop sits next door if you want to pick up handmade crafts or bags of Costa Rican coffee to take home. From there, you head to the Bribri village itself, where a local family shows you how they prepare chocolate and use medicinal plants, and you get to ask questions about their customs and way of life.
After the village, you move into the rainforest for a swim at natural pools and gentle waterfalls, a quiet break surrounded by greenery. Then comes a guided 2-kilometer trail through secondary forest where the real wildlife watching happens: red dart frogs, howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins, two- and three-toed sloths, toucans, oropendolas, tanagers, hummingbirds, and squirrels fill the canopy and forest floor. The trail ends in Cahuita National Park, where the coastal walk lets you see the park's biodiversity against the backdrop of the Caribbean shoreline.
A bilingual guide leads the entire tour in an air-conditioned vehicle, and all park entrance fees and the chocolate tour fee are included. Bottled water is provided throughout. The pace suits all fitness levels, though the hikes involve walking on natural terrain and some time in water.
