Step-by-step itinerary
Explore culture, ceremony, and nature
- Tour Puerto Limón and learn culture
- Visit Bribri reserve and meet shaman
- Experience chocolate-making and healing plants
- Participate in spiritual cleansing ceremony
- Relax at natural pools and waterfalls
The experience
The tour starts in Puerto Limón with your guide sharing the city's Afro-Caribbean history before heading into the Talamanca mountains. Once at the Bribri Indigenous reserve, a local shaman welcomes you and leads a spiritual cleansing ceremony using sacred plants, chants, and traditional instruments: the core of the day. The ritual is designed to cleanse energy, seek protection, or invite healing, depending on what you bring to it.
Between the ceremony and the waterfalls, you'll roast and grind raw cacao by hand the way the Bribri have for generations, and learn which native plants the community uses for healing. The guide explains the Bribri cosmology and how their traditions honor the Earth and natural elements. This is not a performance: you are in the reserve as a guest of the community, and the shaman and guide are locals who live there.
The final stop is a series of natural pools fed by gentle waterfalls, surrounded by rainforest. You can swim or sit quietly. There is no schedule pressure here. The air-conditioned vehicle picks you up from your hotel and brings you back, and the bilingual guide speaks English and Spanish throughout.
