The experience

“You ever seen a basilisk run on water?” our guide José grinned as we drifted along the Tortuguero Canals, sunlight flickering through the leaves. I didn’t even know what a basilisk was until he pointed one out. This little green lizard darting across the surface like it was nothing. The air smelled kind of sweet and muddy at the same time, and there were these birds everywhere, some calling out sharp and quick, others just gliding past us in silence. I kept hoping for a sloth but honestly, just floating there with all that green pressing in felt pretty good.

Afterwards we stopped at a banana plantation, not something I’d ever thought about visiting before. The workers waved as we walked by (one of them had music playing from his phone, some reggae beat mixing with the sound of machetes). José explained how bananas get from here to breakfast tables around the world. He handed us a piece of fruit straight off the bunch: warmer than I expected, soft and almost floral tasting. I probably looked ridiculous trying to peel it without squishing it.

We ended up at Playa Bonita for a bit, toes in warm sand and salt on my lips. Then back through Limon itself, where people leaned out of shop doors or just nodded as we passed. It wasn’t fancy or anything: more like you’re seeing how people actually live here. I still think about that canal ride though, how quiet it got sometimes except for birds or someone laughing nearby. Makes you want to slow down for once, you know?
