The experience

We slid into the boat just after docking in Limon, still shaking off that cruise ship air. The Tortuguero Canals looked almost unreal, so green it felt like someone cranked up the saturation. Our guide, Mauricio, pointed out a basilisk lizard sunning itself (he called it the “Jesus Christ lizard” because it runs on water, I laughed but honestly, it did look like a tiny miracle). The air was thick and sweet. Somewhere behind us, I caught the smell of wet earth mixed with something fruity I couldn’t place. Birds darted overhead: one flashed blue so bright it made me blink.

I didn’t expect to get so into the banana farm part of this day trip from Limon.
