The experience
The day starts with a walk through Cahuita National Park, one of the most biodiverse areas in Costa Rica. You move through the forest looking for monkeys, sloths, coatis and other wildlife while the guide explains the history and culture of the South Caribbean region. The pace is steady but not rushed, and the guide points out animals and plants as you go.
After the park, you head to a Bri-Bri family's home in their indigenous community. Here you learn about their traditions, medicinal plants, natural dyes and language. The centerpiece is watching the traditional preparation of cacao (the sacred food, as they call it), and tasting the chocolate they make. A Bri-Bri cook then serves lunch cooked the traditional way, using local ingredients and flavors you won't find in restaurants. Fresh fruit and coconut water come at the end of the meal.
The final stop is Ma-Cu Waterfall, a 20-minute walk into the jungle. You reach a pool fed by the waterfall where you can swim and cool off. Fresh fruit is served poolside before the group heads back. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you don't need to arrange transport.
