The experience

The air hits you warm and thick the moment you step off the ship in Limón. Your guide is waiting at the port with a clipboard and a vehicle running: no searching, no negotiating. Within minutes you're heading south toward Cahuita National Park, about thirty minutes down the coast, and the landscape shifts from port sprawl to dense jungle pressing right up to the road. The naturalist guide knows where to look. Monkeys call from the canopy before you see them, and then suddenly they're there: howler monkeys, capuchins, sloths moving through the branches like they have nowhere to be. Iguanas sun themselves on rocks. The park protects both land and reef, so the water you see is turquoise and alive in a way that feels different from the open Caribbean.

The walk through Cahuita Park itself is not strenuous. The trail is there, the guide points things out, and you move at a pace that lets you actually see what's happening instead of just walking past it.
