The experience
Cahuita National Park is a working conservation reserve, not a manicured attraction, and the difference shows in what you actually encounter. The forest doesn't perform for visitors. It just contains them: you walk the trails and the animals are there because they live there. Capuchin monkeys move through the canopy, racoons turn over leaf litter, Northern tamanduas dig into dead wood. The guide knows where to look and when, which changes what you see from a walk in the woods to a real wildlife tour.
The park's layout gives you both ecosystems in one morning. The beaches are genuine white sand, not imported, and they run into the reef that extends 240 hectares out from Cahuita Point: close enough to see from shore, far enough that the water stays clear. The marshes behind the forest line hold green iguanas, basilisks, gigantic blue crabs and a working population of wading birds: frigatebirds, green ibis, blue herons, gulls. You move between these zones on foot, which means you're not watching from a vehicle or a platform. The guide controls the pace and the stops, so you're not racing through.
An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up from your hotel and brings you to the park entrance. From there, the day is on the trails. Bring water and wear shoes that grip wet rock: the forest floor stays damp and the beach sections can be slippery. The park has toilets, showers and changing rooms if you want to swim after the walk.

Top questions
What animals am I most likely to see on the Cahuita National Park tour?
Capuchin monkeys, racoons and Northern tamanduas are common in the forest. You'll also encounter opposums, porcupines, green iguanas and basilisks. The marshes and beaches hold frigatebirds, green ibis, blue herons and gulls, plus gigantic blue crabs. Sightings depend on the time of day and season, and the guide knows when and where to look.
How much of the tour is walking versus time on the beach?
The tour combines forest trails with beach sections as you move through the park. You're on foot the entire time once you arrive at the park entrance, walking between the tropical forest and the white sand beaches. The pace is controlled by the guide, so you stop when wildlife appears or when the landscape warrants it.
Does the tour include swimming or time in the water?
The park has white sand beaches and the water is accessible, but swimming is not a scheduled part of the tour itinerary. The park provides toilets, showers and changing rooms if you want to enter the water on your own during the tour.
What's included in the pickup, and where does it start?
Hotel pickup is included in the tour. An air-conditioned vehicle collects you from your accommodation and transports you to Cahuita National Park. The guide meets you at the park entrance and leads the walking tour from there.
Is this tour suitable if I'm not in peak physical condition?
The tour requires at least a moderate level of physical fitness because you'll be walking forest trails and beach sections on foot. The guide sets the pace, but you should be comfortable walking for extended periods on uneven terrain that may be wet or slippery.
