Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Caribbean wildlife and culture
- Drive through coastal towns
- Taste tropical fruits and local coffee
- Visit sloth rescue center
- Walk 2-km trail in Cahuita National Park
- Optional Caribbean-style lunch
The experience
You start with a drive through Limón's coastal towns, where your guide introduces the region's layered history: Afro-Caribbean heritage, maritime trade, and the immigrant communities whose influence still shapes daily life and culture. The commentary frames what you're seeing (the architecture, the neighborhoods, the way people live) as you move through the landscape. A stop at a local fruit stand offers complimentary tastings of pineapple, papaya, mini bananas, platanitos, watermelon, and fresh coconut water, with optional Caribbean patties or coconut drinks for $1–$2.
The rescue center visit puts you face to face with two- and three-toed sloths in a dedicated conservation space. You observe them at close range while learning how the sanctuary protects these animals and their habitat. From there, you walk the Jungle Trail in Cahuita National Park: a 2-kilometer guided trek through secondary forest where the biodiversity is dense enough that sightings are common. Red dart frogs, howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins, and both sloth species appear regularly. Bird watchers spot toucans, oropendolas, tanagers, hummingbirds, and great kiskadees. Squirrels and butterflies move through the canopy. The guide names what you see and explains how the ecosystem works.
The tour ends with an optional stop at a local restaurant where Caribbean-style lunch (coconut rice and beans, grilled fish with lime, chicken in Caribbean sauce, or crispy patacones) is available at your own cost. You return to your starting point with transport in an air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water provided throughout, and WiFi on board.
