- Birding at Reserve and Stella's Bakery
The Experience
It’s barely light when I step out in front of Stella’s Bakery, the air still cool and a bit damp—classic Monteverde. There’s a faint smell of fresh bread drifting out the door, and a couple of locals are already sipping coffee inside. Our guide, Andrés, is waiting with a spotting scope slung over his shoulder, chatting quietly with early risers about what birds have been active this week.
By 7am, we’re off, heading toward either Curi Cancha or the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve—Andrés asks what we’re hoping to see, and tailors the route on the spot. The trails are soft underfoot, and you can hear the low hum of insects mixed with the occasional call of a motmot or bellbird. Every so often, Andrés stops, sets up the scope, and suddenly we’re all peering at a flash of color in the canopy—a toucanet, maybe, or if we’re lucky, a resplendent quetzal. He’s quick to share little facts, like how some birds only show up when the mist rolls in or which trees attract hummingbirds after rain. Five hours go by faster than you’d think; I barely notice my shoes getting muddy or the time slipping away.
