Track rare oilbirds and hundreds of species through Monteverde cloud forest with a researcher who wrote the field guide.

A 3.5-hour birdwatching tour in Monteverde led by Eduardo Venegas, an ornithologist and eco-tourism guide with over 20 years of experience studying Costa Rica's birds. The Monteverde area holds more than 500 bird species: more than the entire continental U.S., and Venegas has spent decades documenting them, including research on the oilbird, a rare nocturnal species he has studied since 2010 in collaboration with Costa Rica's National Institute of Biodiversity. The tour operates in English or Spanish and requires a minimum age of 13 and moderate fitness. Transportation to your hotel can be arranged separately.

The experience

Monteverde sits in a cloud forest where more than 500 bird species live. A density that makes it one of the richest birdwatching destinations in the world. Eduardo Venegas has spent over two decades learning to find them. He contributed technical expertise and photography to "An Illustrated Field Guide to Birds of Costa Rica," and his research on the oilbird (a nocturnal fruit-eating bird rarely documented in Costa Rica) has been conducted since 2010 with the National Institute of Biodiversity. When you book this tour, you're walking with someone who knows not just where the birds are, but why they're there.

The 3.5-hour tour moves through the habitat where these species live, and Venegas reads the forest for movement and sound. Birdwatching depends on patience and a guide who can distinguish calls, spot camouflaged plumage, and know the seasonal patterns that bring certain species into view. Venegas brings that specificity: years of field notes, research documentation, and the ability to explain what you're seeing in real time. Entry to Montenubis Monteverde is included.

The tour runs in English or Spanish, and you'll need moderate fitness to walk the terrain. It's not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health. Guides can be arranged in either language depending on your preference at booking. Transportation to and from your hotel is not included but can be set up separately if you request it.

What’s included

  • Entry to Montenubis Monteverde.
  • a live guide in English or Spanish.
  • 3.5 hours of birdwatching instruction and species identification in the Monteverde cloud forest.
