Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Butterfly Conservatory and Nature

  • Visit Butterfly Conservatory habitats
  • Watch butterfly life-cycle demonstration
  • See tropical frogs and turtles
  • Walk trails with nature map
  • Explore botanical and herb gardens
  • Visit insect museum and souvenir shop

“You’re not supposed to touch the butterflies,” our guide Luis grinned, “but if they land on you, it’s good luck.” I laughed because one had already perched on my shoulder — this electric blue thing that looked fake until it fluttered. The air inside the first dome felt warm and thick, like standing in a greenhouse after rain. You could smell damp leaves and something sweet from the flowers. Luis pointed out a glasswing butterfly — he called it ‘espejitos’ — and I tried to say it back in Spanish. He just smiled, maybe politely ignoring my accent.

The Butterfly Conservatory is right near Arenal Volcano (you can see the peak if the clouds behave), but honestly I got distracted by all the movement around my feet — tiny frogs hopping into puddles by the path. We watched a live demo of the butterfly life cycle; there was this moment when a caterpillar split open and wriggled into its new skin. Some kids in our group gasped, and even the adults looked kind of mesmerized. I didn’t expect to care about bugs this much, but seeing them so close up — you start to notice their weird colors and how careful everyone is not to step on anything alive.

You get to wander through different habitats at your own pace with a map (ours got muddy fast). There’s a section with poison dart frogs and turtles — bright reds, greens, these little chirps echoing off the leaves. The trail isn’t long but we took forever because someone kept stopping for photos (okay, me). At one point it started drizzling and everything smelled sharper, more green somehow. In the insect museum at the end, there were beetles bigger than my thumb and jewelry made from butterfly wings that looked almost too delicate to touch.

I still think about that blue butterfly landing on me — silly how something so small can stick in your memory longer than volcano views or souvenirs. If you’re anywhere near Arenal and have a couple hours free, this tour is easygoing but unexpectedly absorbing… plus you’ll probably leave with wet shoes.
