itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Night walk exploring Monteverde wildlife

  • Receive welcome drink or snack
  • Get flashlights and instructions
  • Begin two-hour night forest walk
  • Observe mammals, amphibians, reptiles, insects, birds
  • Discuss species and interesting facts
  • Return to reception and return lanterns
  • Bid farewell to visitors

The first thing that hit me was the smell—kind of earthy, like wet leaves and something sweet drifting from the coffee plants. I’d never been on a night walk before, so when our guide handed out flashlights and grinned, I felt both excited and weirdly nervous. There were just six of us, shuffling around trying to get our beams pointed somewhere useful. Someone’s light caught a huge moth right away—its wings looked almost metallic in the glare. The forest felt alive in a way I hadn’t expected; every step sounded louder than usual.

Our guide (I think his name was Diego?) seemed to know every rustle and chirp. He’d stop us suddenly—“Listen!”—and we’d all freeze, trying to catch whatever he heard. At one point he pointed up and there was this tiny bird, somehow asleep on a branch, feathers puffed up against the chill. I tried to whisper “how does it not fall?” but my voice came out too loud and startled someone behind me. We laughed quietly about it for the next few minutes. The main keyword here is Monteverde night walk—I didn’t realize how much you actually see after dark.

We found frogs with skin so bright they looked fake under our lights, and Diego told us which ones were poisonous (I kept my hands well away). There were spiders too—big ones—and even though I’m not usually squeamish, I had to admit I stepped back once or twice. The best part might have been near the end when the trees opened up just enough for us to see stars overhead—clouds moved fast but for a moment everything went quiet except for some distant insect noise. I still think about that silence sometimes.
