The experience

The first thing I noticed at Monteverde Butterfly Gardens wasn’t the butterflies. It was this faint, earthy smell, like wet leaves after rain. Our guide, Julia, grinned when she saw me wrinkle my nose. “That’s the caterpillars,” she said, waving us into the rearing chamber. I’d expected bright wings everywhere right away, but instead we started with these tiny green munchers chewing methodically on leaves. Julia handed me a fat caterpillar: surprisingly cool and soft in my palm. I tried not to flinch (I failed). She laughed and told me they’re fussier than toddlers about their food.

We wandered through three different gardens, each one warmer and more humid than the last.
