The Experience

The first thing I noticed at Monteverde Butterfly Gardens wasn’t the butterflies — it was this faint, earthy smell, like wet leaves after rain. Our guide, Julia, grinned when she saw me wrinkle my nose. “That’s the caterpillars,” she said, waving us into the rearing chamber. I’d expected bright wings everywhere right away, but instead we started with these tiny green munchers chewing methodically on leaves. Julia handed me a fat caterpillar — surprisingly cool and soft in my palm. I tried not to flinch (I failed). She laughed and told me they’re fussier than toddlers about their food.

We wandered through three different gardens, each one warmer and more humid than the last. Butterflies drifted around like bits of colored paper, sometimes landing on someone’s shirt or hair for a second before fluttering off again. There was this blue morpho that kept circling us — huge wings flashing electric blue every time it turned in the light. At one point, a little kid squealed when one landed on his finger and wouldn’t let go. I caught myself smiling at that; it felt contagious somehow.

The insectarium part surprised me most — all these beetles, stick insects, even a tarantula (behind glass, thankfully). Julia knew every species by name and had stories about each one; she said locals used to call some of them “jewels of the forest.” She let us watch an ant colony at work too — honestly mesmerizing how organized they were compared to my own brain some days. The tour lasted just over an hour but didn’t feel rushed at all; you could linger afterward if you wanted. I still think about that flash of blue from the morpho butterfly — it pops into my head sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
