Step-by-step itinerary
Canoe tour through Tortuguero canals
- Meet guide at Los Almendros pier
- Receive tour instructions and board canoe
- Arrive at national park entrance booth
- Show park ticket and check in
- Begin canoe tour through canals
- Observe wildlife and listen to guide
The experience
You meet the guide at the main pier in Los Almendros, board the canoe and paddle to the park entrance booth together. Once the rangers check your national park ticket, you head into the canal system. The guide rows with you through the waterways, calling out animals as they appear in the trees and water. The pace is slow enough that spotting is the whole point, not something that happens by accident.
The three-hour paddle winds through narrow canals where sound carries differently on the water. You listen for birds before you see them, watch for the shape of a sloth hanging motionless in the canopy, and keep an eye on the water line for caimans and river turtles. The guide shares facts about the species and the park's history as you move, making the tour less about ticking off sightings and more about understanding what you're looking at. Small groups, maximum eight people, mean the canoe stays quiet and maneuverable.
Bring a camera with a good zoom and wear clothes that dry quickly. The canoe stays stable but splashes happen. Sunscreen and a hat matter more here than on land tours because the water reflects the sun. The guide provides life jackets and oars, so you only need to show up ready to paddle and watch.

Is this one for you?Three hours is long enough to paddle deep into the canal system and see animals in their habitat, but short enough to fit into a morning or afternoon without eating the whole day. If you're island-hopping or have other activities planned, this tour leaves room for them.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (11 to 17 years); Child (3 to 10 years); Infant (under 3): free.
How much paddling do I actually do on this canoe tour?
The guide rows the canoe and controls the direction. You paddle when the guide suggests it, but spotting animals is the focus, not a fitness test. The tour suits all fitness levels because the pace is set by wildlife sightings, not by effort.
What animals am I likely to see in Tortuguero's canals?
Sloths, monkeys, aquatic birds, caimans and river turtles are common in the park. What appears depends on the time of day and season, but the guide knows where to look and will point out animals you'd miss from the canoe alone.
Do I need to buy the national park ticket before the tour starts?
You purchase the national park ticket at the entrance booth on the day of the tour, after you arrive at the pier. The guide meets you at Los Almendros and takes you to the booth as part of the tour.
Is this tour good for someone who has never paddled a canoe?
Yes. The guide handles navigation and speed, and the canoe is stable on calm canal water. Life jackets are provided, and the tour is designed for all fitness levels, so paddling experience is not required.
How early do I need to arrive at the pier in Los Almendros?
The guide will confirm the exact meeting time when you book. Arrive a few minutes early so the guide can give you instructions and help you settle into the canoe before heading to the park entrance.
