The experience

The tour starts early at the main pier in Tortuguero, 20 meters south of the center. A certified guide meets you there and takes you to the National Park entrance to hand in your pre-purchased entry ticket. Once inside, you board the rowing canoe and head into the channels where the real work begins, and where the quiet makes all the difference. Motorboats scare animals away. A canoe that moves by paddle keeps the wildlife calm enough to watch.

You'll see monkeys, caimans, birds and other species that live in these waterways. The guide knows where to find them and what you're looking at. The channels themselves are narrow enough that you're close to the water and the vegetation, so the views stay sharp all the way through. Bring a camera with a good zoom. The animals stay at a distance, but the light is best in the early morning when the tour runs.

Life jackets are part of the package. The tour runs about three hours total, including the time to get to the park and settle into the canoe. Public transportation options exist nearby if you're staying in town without a car, though the pier pickup is the standard start point.
