Search the night trail and find what hides in the vegetation

Step-by-step itinerary

Evening night tour in Tortuguero

  • Meet guide at main dock
  • Guide introduction and tour briefing
  • Walk through village observing old machinery
  • Enter trail to spot nocturnal wildlife

The experience

The tour meets at the main dock in Tortuguero los Almendros at 6pm. Your guide introduces the route and what to expect, then you walk through the village itself: a short stretch where the guide points out old pieces of machinery scattered around town, giving you context for the place before the forest work begins. This walk through the settlement is part of the tour structure, not a detour.

Once you reach the trail, the dynamic shifts. Instead of following a fixed path while the guide narrates, you're actively searching: the guide spots movement or a shape in the vegetation and asks you to find it, testing your night vision and attention. Frogs call from branches, snakes rest on low limbs, insects cling to bark, and occasionally a mammal moves through the understory. The species change with the season and the night, so each tour finds different animals. You'll carry a lantern to help with the search, and the guide carries one too.

The whole outing runs about two hours from dock to return, which fits into an evening without eating into the next day's plans. The pace is walking speed on a maintained trail, and the guide adjusts the route based on what you're spotting and how the group is moving.
