Step-by-step itinerary
Tortuguero canals, forest, and night walk
- Canoe tour at sunrise
- Hike Jaguar Trail in rainforest
- Night walk to spot wildlife
The experience
The day starts before dawn. You paddle a canoe or kayak through the main and secondary canals of Tortuguero National Park at 6 a.m., when the water is calmest and the animals most active. Sloths, three types of monkeys and exotic birds move through the canopy in the soft light. The guide reads the forest and points out what to watch for. The paddle lasts until around 11 a.m., when you trade the water for the Jaguar Trail: a terrestrial route that cuts between the beach and the dense rainforest interior. Here the focus shifts to the plants and the traces fauna leave behind: tracks, scat, feeding signs that tell you how species interact in this specific ecosystem.
By late afternoon you return for the night walk, which starts at 6:30 p.m. The jungle transforms after sunset. Armed with a lantern, you move slowly through the understory looking for colorful frogs, insects and nocturnal mammals that only emerge when the sun is gone. The guide knows where to listen and what the sounds mean. The whole package runs six to seven hours across the three segments, with the guide present for all of it and rain ponchos on hand if the afternoon brings weather.

What wildlife can I expect to see on the morning kayak through the canals?
Sloths, three types of monkeys and a wide variety of exotic birds are active at sunrise when the water is calmest. The naturalist guide navigates the main and secondary canals where fauna is most visible, giving you the best chance to observe them in the soft morning light.
Do I need kayaking experience to paddle the canals?
No prior experience is required. The morning segment uses either a canoe or kayak, and the guide handles navigation while you paddle. Equipment (canoe or kayak, oars and life jackets) is provided, and the pace is set to the calm of early morning when the water is gentlest.
What is the Jaguar Trail and what will I see there?
The Jaguar Trail is a terrestrial hike through the rainforest between the beach and the dense interior forest. You'll explore the biodiversity of that zone with the guide, learning about local flora and looking for traces of fauna: tracks, feeding signs and other evidence of how species interact in the ecosystem. The hike takes place around midday.
What happens on the night walk, and is it safe?
The night walk begins at 6:30 p.m. after sunset, when nocturnal creatures emerge. You move through the jungle with a lantern, searching for colorful frogs, insects and nocturnal mammals. The guide leads the way, using their knowledge of the forest to locate animals and interpret the sounds around you.
What's included in the package, and what do I need to bring?
The package includes a canoe or kayak with oars and life jackets, a naturalist guide for all three segments, rain ponchos, and a welcome snack at 6 a.m. (coffee, tea, fruit and cookies). Wear comfortable hiking shoes, bring sun protection and a light layer for the evening. The guide and equipment handle the rest.
