The Experience

What time does the canoe launch? At sunrise, when the rainforest is noisiest and most active. You'll paddle into the narrow canals of Tortuguero National Park in a canoe with no more than 10 other people, which means your guide has time to stop and point out what's moving in the trees and water instead of rushing through a packed boat. The guide is a certified local naturalist—someone who knows which calls mean howler monkeys are near, where sloths hang in the canopy, and which birds are worth the binoculars you'll have on board.

The canoe itself is how you get access to places a larger boat can't reach. You move quietly through waterways that are barely wider than the boat, at water level, surrounded by the sounds of the forest. Monkeys, toucans, caimans and colorful tropical birds live along these channels, and the slow pace and low angle mean you see them before they scatter. Binoculars are provided—one pair for every two guests—so you can watch without getting close enough to disturb anything. Rain ponchos are on board if the weather turns, and life jackets are included.

The whole tour takes about 2.5 hours from launch to return. You'll need to arrange your own way to the meeting point, though public transportation options are available nearby. Infants can come along if they sit on an adult's lap. The only thing you need to handle separately is the Tortuguero National Park entrance ticket, which you buy online before the tour starts—the guide will tell you how when you book.

Is this one for you?The sunrise start means an early wake-up, but it's when the rainforest is most active and your chances of seeing wildlife are highest. The small group size and slow canoe pace let you linger on animals instead of rushing past them, which suits anyone who came to watch rather than just pass through.

Top questions

What animals will I actually see on the Tortuguero canoe tour?

Monkeys, toucans, caimans, sloths and colorful tropical birds are the wildlife your guide looks for along the waterways. The sunrise timing matters because animals are most active when the rainforest is waking up, so your chances of spotting them are highest in the early morning.

Why is a canoe better than a bigger boat for wildlife watching in Tortuguero?

A canoe fits into the narrow canals where larger boats can't go, and you travel at water level instead of from above. That position and the quiet pace mean you see animals before they move away, and the small group size—maximum 10 guests—gives your guide time to stop and point things out instead of keeping the boat moving.

Do I need to buy the Tortuguero National Park ticket separately?

Yes, the park entrance ticket must be purchased online before the tour begins. It's not included in the canoe tour price, so you'll need to arrange that ahead of time.

What's included in the canoe tour price?

The tour includes the canoe and life jackets, a certified local guide, binoculars (one pair for every two guests), and rain ponchos if weather requires them. Your guide speaks either English or Spanish, depending on which option you choose at checkout.

How early do I need to wake up for the sunrise departure?

The canoe launches at sunrise, which varies by season but is typically between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m. in Tortuguero. The whole tour takes about 2.5 hours, so you'll be back by mid-morning.

Can I bring an infant on the canoe tour?

Yes, infants can join the tour as long as they sit on an adult's lap. The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels, and life jackets are provided for everyone.
