Step-by-step itinerary
Canoe tour and guided hike
- Canoe ride through Tortuguero canals
- Spot wildlife from the canoe
- Guided hike along park trails
- Learn about local flora and fauna
The experience
The tour starts on the water. You paddle through Tortuguero's canals in a canoe, moving slowly enough to spot caimans resting on the banks, howler monkeys in the trees above, and tropical birds in flight. The guide points out what to watch for and hands you binoculars to see detail. A life jacket and poncho keep you safe and dry. The aluminum paddles are sized for comfort. The canals wind through dense vegetation, and the guide explains what you're seeing: how the ecosystem holds together, which birds nest where, why the water moves as it does.
After the canoe, you step onto the trails of Tortuguero National Park for a guided hike. Rubber boots grip the wet forest floor. The guide leads you deeper into the rainforest, stopping to show you sloths hanging in the canopy, iguanas on branches, and the layered structure of the trees, from the tallest emergents down to the understory where smaller animals live. You learn how the plants and animals depend on each other, and the guide uses binoculars to help you spot species that stay hidden. The whole experience runs about five hours.
