Kayaking in Tortuguero National Park: Narrow forest channels
The only sound is nature itself in the narrow channels.
Kayak through Tortuguero Lagoon and the canals of Tortuguero National Park, paddling narrow forest channels where wildlife (caimans, iguanas, herons, monkeys and sloths) moves freely around you. The 2.5-hour paddle reaches areas beyond the usual routes, where the forest closes in on both sides and the park stays quiet. Life jacket and drybag are included. The park entrance ticket is separate.

Step-by-step itinerary
Kayak tour through Tortuguero canals
- Start at Tortuguero Lagoon
- Kayak through narrow forest channels
- Explore quiet park corners
- Observe wildlife like caimans and sloths
The experience
You paddle from Tortuguero Lagoon into narrow channels completely surrounded by forest, steering your own kayak through the park's quietest corners. The operator takes routes beyond what most visitors see, which means smaller waterways where the only sound is the paddle hitting water and the animals moving through the canopy. Caimans rest on the banks, iguanas hang in the branches overhead, herons stand motionless in the shallows, and if you're patient, monkeys and sloths appear in the trees.
The paddle lasts 2.5 hours. You wear a life jacket throughout, and a drybag keeps your phone and camera dry if you request one in advance. A guide who speaks English or Spanish leads the group and points out wildlife. The pace is set by the kayak, not a vehicle, so you move at the speed the water and the animals allow.
The entrance ticket to Tortuguero National Park's Canales Sector is not included in the booking, so you'll arrange that separately. The activity suits all fitness levels, though it's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or pregnant travelers. If you have other needs (a different pace, a specific time, accessibility requirements), contact the operator before booking and they'll work with you to adapt the experience.

Is this one for you?At 2.5 hours, the paddle fits easily into a morning or afternoon without dominating the day, leaving time for other activities in Tortuguero or the surrounding area. The self-guided pace, you control the kayak, suits travelers who want to move at their own speed and linger when wildlife appears, rather than follow a fixed itinerary.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (11 to 17 years); Child (3 to 10 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What wildlife will I actually see on the kayak paddle through Tortuguero?
Caimans, iguanas, herons, monkeys and sloths live in the forest and waterways year-round. The guide knows where they tend to rest and feed, so sightings are common, though no encounter is guaranteed: the animals move on their own schedule.
Do I need kayaking experience to paddle these channels?
No experience is required. The narrow channels move slowly and stay shallow, and the guide leads the group at a pace suited to all fitness levels. You operate the kayak yourself, but the water and the route are forgiving.
How long is the kayaking part, and what else happens during the 2.5 hours?
The entire 2.5-hour activity is spent paddling and observing wildlife in the channels. There are no stops or transfers. You're on the water for the full duration.
Is the park entrance fee included, or do I pay separately?
The park entrance ticket to Tortuguero National Park's Canales Sector is not included. You'll need to purchase it separately before or at the time of your kayak activity.
