The Experience

The day starts with the ride. Two guides bracket the group—one ahead to set the pace, one behind to keep the horses together—and you move through wide open fields and lush mountain terrain for 11 miles. The horses are docile and the operation has completed over 300 rides without incident, so beginners and experienced riders both fit here. The guides stay close and expect you to follow their instructions; after the ride ends, a 20-minute drive takes you to the coffee farm.

At the farm, a family that has owned and worked the land for years walks you through every stage of their coffee production: planting, picking ripe beans, depulping, fermenting, washing, drying, threshing, roasting, grinding and packing. You don't just watch—you participate in the process. The farmers are passionate about what they do and treat visitors as part of the family rather than as tourists passing through. A traditional Colombian lunch, cooked and served by the hosts, anchors the afternoon.

The coffee tasting happens while you eat. The farmers brew their highest-quality beans in four different methods—Chemex, French Press, Moka and Japanese Syphon—so you can taste the same coffee prepared four ways and decide which method you prefer. An expert walks you through Colombian coffee while you compare. By the end of the day, you'll understand the work behind the cup and have the knowledge to run your own farm, the operator says.
