The experience
Seven hours on Monte & Panela starts before you ride: you arrive at the finca and Juan José welcomes you with fresh local coffee, then sit down to breakfast. Eggs, fresh cheese made on the farm that morning, and produce from the land itself. This is not a quick meal before the activity. It is the first piece of what the farm actually is. After breakfast, you move through the animals. You feed calves by hand, milk the cows, and get a sense of how the place runs before you ever mount a horse.
The horseback riding covers 200 private acres of mountain terrain on safe, established trails. The horses are gentle and live freely on the property, treated as part of the family rather than equipment. You ride through the Andes landscape, and at the top of the ride, you feed the horses again, then settle into a hammock with fresh fruit and views that hold the whole valley. The pace is set by the land and the animals, not by a schedule.
Juan José guides the whole day himself: no rotating staff, no intermediaries between you and the person who grew up here. He speaks English and Spanish, and the point of his presence is not to narrate facts but to make sure you feel at home on his family's land. Children from age 1 can come. Infants and small children can ride in a stroller, and the farm welcomes service animals. Transportation to and from the city is included, and you'll wear a helmet for the riding portion.
