The Experience

Hooves on gravel — that’s the first thing I remember. We’d just left the edge of Medellin behind, but it felt like we’d crossed into another world. The city noise faded quick, replaced by this soft clop-clop and the kind of quiet you only get in the hills. Our guide, Juan, handed me the reins and grinned when I admitted I hadn’t been on a horse since I was a kid. “No worries,” he said, “this one’s tranquilo.” He patted my horse’s neck — honestly, she looked calmer than me.

The ride itself was about two hours (give or take — nobody seemed in a hurry), winding up and down these green slopes dotted with cows and those bright country houses you see in Colombian postcards. At one point, we paused near a ridge where you could see all of Medellin below — tiny and far away. The air smelled like wet grass and woodsmoke from somewhere nearby. Juan pointed out some wildflowers whose name I immediately forgot (sorry Juan), but he laughed when I tried repeating it anyway.

I liked that there were two guides — one up front, another behind us — so nobody got left behind or lost. The horses were picked for our skill level; mine plodded along patiently while someone else in our group took off at a canter with the other guide cheering them on. My thighs are still sore as I write this (worth it). They dropped us right back at our hotel afterward — muddy boots and all. If you’re looking for a horseback riding tour in Medellin that feels real, not rushed, this is it. I still think about that quiet stretch above the city sometimes…
