The Experience
Skanderbeg Square is where the tour begins, and it's the frame for Tirana's whole story. Your guide walks you through the square's political and architectural layers—the Opera House, the National History Museum, the National Bank, City Hall—each one marking a different chapter. From there you move into the New Bazaar, a working market where locals shop and the city's everyday rhythm is visible.
The Clock Tower stands next to Et'hem Bey Mosque, a 19th-century survivor that's the only remaining mosque from that era in Tirana. Both were built by the same person and form a single architectural ensemble. You can climb the tower's 90 stairs to reach the top and look out over the square and beyond. Then comes BunkArt 2, the atomic bomb shelter built between 1981 and 1986 by the communist regime—24 rooms, an apartment for the Minister of Internal Affairs, and a large hall designed to withstand chemical and nuclear attack. It was never actually used for training. Walking down People's Martyr's Boulevard, you'll pass the main government buildings and reach Mother Theresa Square, where the Tirana University Building and the Air Albania Arena sit alongside other landmarks.
The Pyramid of Tirana was once a museum dedicated to the communist leader; now it's being rebuilt as a technology center. Blloku, the upscale neighborhood that was closed off during communist rule, shows you where the party elite lived—Enver Hoxha's villa is still there. The tour ends at Komiteti, a café-museum inside a preserved communist-era apartment filled with old radios, furniture, kitchenware and glassware from that period. You sit down there for coffee, refreshments or rakia, the Albanian spirit, and the artefacts around you become part of the conversation about what you've just seen.
