The Experience
The tour begins at Skanderbeg Square, the 40,000-square-metre plaza at the heart of Tirana, where the Skanderbeg Monument dominates the space. From there, you move through the National History Museum, a 27,000-square-metre building opened in 1981 with a massive mural mosaic titled "The Albanians" above its entrance. The guide walks you past the Et'hem Bey Mosque, which was closed during communist rule and reopened in 1991; you'll step inside to see the frescoes depicting trees, waterfalls and bridges on the portico. Next to it stands the Clock Tower, built in 1822 by Et'hem bey Mollaj, a structure recognized as a monument of culture since 1948.
The route continues to Bunk'Art 2, a museum and art space built inside a former communist-era nuclear bunker, and past The Cloud, a three-dimensional art installation in front of the National Gallery designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. You'll see Tirana Castle, a fortress dating back before 1300 that once marked where the main east–west and north–south roads crossed, and St Paul's Cathedral, a modern structure with a stained glass window featuring Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa. Youth Park, built in 1950 and covering 2.98 hectares, offers a moment to step back from the urban core.
The Pyramid of Tirana is the final major stop. Originally opened as a museum to the dictator Enver Hoxha in 1988, it became a NATO base during the 1999 Kosovo War and reopened in May 2023 as the TUMO Center Tirana after a redesign by MVRDV. You climb to the top for views of the city, with a photo stop timed for sunset if the schedule allows. The House of Leaves Museum, housed in the former headquarters of the communist secret police, is visited from outside; the guide explains its role in the regime's surveillance apparatus. Throughout the walk, the guide offers recommendations for traditional restaurants and can advise on dietary needs.
