The Experience

Skanderbeg Square is where the tour starts, and your guide walks you through the history layered into the buildings around it. The Et'hem Bey Mosque stands nearby—the only remaining mosque from the 19th century in Tirana, decorated with architecture and art that still draws attention in the heart of the city. You'll also see the Castle, built near the old Justinian fortress, and hear about the Toptani family who owned it and governed Ottoman territories from here in the seventeenth century.

The tour takes you inside a café-museum housed in a communist-era apartment, where you sit with old radios, furniture, and kitchenware from that period while tasting traditional Albanian coffee, refreshments, or rakia—the local spirit. From there you walk to the Pyramid of Tirana, the iconic building that once housed a museum dedicated to the communist leader and has since been reconstructed as a technological center. The main boulevard, built in the 1930s, shows you government buildings and traces the modern history of the city and country.

The route also passes through Blloku, the upscale neighborhood that was closed off during communist rule for the party elite and still contains the villa of dictator Enver Hoxha, alongside the presidential office. You'll see the second-largest square in central Tirana, home to the University, Art University, and Air Albania Arena, and finish near the Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Cathedral, one of the largest in the Balkans, decorated with mosaics and paintings.
