The Experience
The tour starts at Skanderbeg Square, the heart of Tirana's Monumental Center, where the National History Museum, the National Opera House, the Clock Tower and the Et'hem Bey Mosque surround a single plaza. Your guide will walk you through the stark differences between the overbearing communist-era Palace of Culture and the Italian governmental buildings designed by architect Armando Brasini in the 1920s — the same square holds four decades of competing visions of what a capital should look like.
From there you climb 90 steps to the top of the Clock Tower, built in 1840 during Ottoman rule and standing 35 meters tall. The tower offers a rare panoramic view of the city center, even though high-rises now surround it. You'll walk past the Et'hem Bey Mosque, built in 1823 and the only religious monument to survive Albania's Cultural Revolution; the guide will share the history of Islam in Albania as you see the newly restored floral patterns and frescos. The route then takes you to the Tanner's Bridge, an 18th-century Ottoman stone footbridge near Parliament that once linked Tirana to the eastern highlands, and past the recently reopened Toptani Castle, now home to cafes, restaurants and art galleries.
The tour ends in Blloku, the district that was a closed precinct for the Communist party elite during the regime — Enver Hoxha's villa still stands here — and has since transformed into the city's nightlife and dining hub, lined with trendy restaurants, bars and boutiques. You'll also see the Pyramid and pass the monumental Presidential Palace. The guide provides context for each stop; the walking pace suits all fitness levels.
