The Experience

The tour starts at the office in Tirana and moves through the city on foot, beginning with Postblloku—a memorial to Albania's communist-era political prisoners on the main boulevard opposite the government building. From there you walk into the Blloku neighborhood, once restricted to members of the Albanian politburo and now lined with cafes, boutiques and street art. The route passes the residence of Enver Hoxha, Albania's communist leader, so the contrast between what was forbidden and what is now open becomes physical as you move through the streets.

The walk continues toward Skanderbeg Square, the main plaza ringed by the National Museum, the Bank of Albania, the Opera theatre and the Skanderbeg Statue. Here you see the Et'hem Bey Mosque and the Clock Tower, both Ottoman landmarks that survived the communist period. From the square, the route heads to Tirana Castle in the city center, now a pedestrian street where modern shops and traditional architecture sit side by side. The guide explains how Albania has held multiple religious communities—Sunni and Bektashi Muslims, Orthodox Christians and Catholics—through the Ottoman Empire, the communist era and into the present, and you pass the Namazgah Mosque (the largest in the Balkans), the Orthodox Cathedral and St. Paul's Cathedral to see this diversity marked in stone. The tour ends at the Pyramid of Tirana and Park Rinia.
