The Experience

Start at Skanderbeg Square, where the main buildings of Tirana surround you and the guide orients the day ahead. From there you move through the city on foot, passing Et'hem Bey Mosque—one of the oldest still standing in the city, built to survive the strict atheistic communist regime—and into the Bazaar, originally the Fortress of Justinian from the 1300s. If the group wants to linger, a 20-minute stop at one of the cafés there is built into the route.

The walk takes in Saint Paul's Cathedral, a striking Roman Catholic structure with modern design and stained-glass windows honoring Mother Teresa, then moves to the Pyramid, now converted to hold rooms for students and businessmen but open to visitors who want to climb to the top for a view of the city. Rinia Park follows—Tirana's most popular green space, filled with trees, fountains, and cafés where locals and visitors gather. The tour ends back at Skanderbeg Square, though the House of Leaves (the communist-era Museum of Secret Surveillance) and the Resurrection of Christ Cathedral, considered among the largest Eastern Orthodox churches in the Balkans, are included in the route if the group chooses to stop.

Two optional paid stops sit within the itinerary. The bunker beneath the streets, created during the communist era, runs about 120 minutes with an audio guide and costs 1,000 ALL per person. The House of Leaves museum, dedicated to the history of political repression and surveillance under communism, takes up to 60 minutes and costs 700 ALL per person. Both are optional depending on group interest. The guide is a licensed professional and the experience is designed to be interactive; the tour suits all fitness levels and children are welcome from age 2.
