The Experience

I opened my eyes to the sound of chickens somewhere outside and the faint smell of wood smoke drifting in through the window. Sapa’s air is cold in the morning — not biting, but enough to make you pull your jacket tighter. Our guide, Minh, met us right at the hotel steps (he grinned and said he could spot “city walkers” from a mile away). We started uphill almost immediately — I was out of breath before we even reached that first lookout where Fansipan just sits in the clouds. The rice terraces below looked like someone had drawn green lines with a ruler, but then let them slip and curve. You can see all of Sapa town from up there. I didn’t expect how quiet it would be except for a few distant dogs barking or a motorbike echoing off the valley.

We stopped in Hang Da village after about two hours. Minh pointed out water buffalo grazing between the paddies (one calf kept following us for a bit — maybe hoping for food?). Lunch was at this tiny restaurant run by a Hmong family; their daughter handed me a bowl of something hot and fragrant — honestly, I still don’t know what half of it was, but it tasted earthy and good after all that walking. Minh tried to explain Hmong marriage traditions while we ate — there was some laughter when I totally mispronounced “zeb” (he said it means “marriage,” but I’m not sure he wasn’t teasing me). After lunch we kept going down little trails to Hau Thao, past kids running barefoot and old women carrying baskets almost as big as they were.

The night at the Black Hmong homestay felt both familiar and strange — everyone crowded around one low table for dinner, steam rising off bowls of rice while someone’s radio played quietly in the corner. In the morning, fog hung over everything until breakfast was nearly done. The trek picked up again through Giang Ta Chai village where we saw Red Dao women in bright headscarves washing clothes by a waterfall. At one point we climbed up into the Hoa Lien Son range — 1,850 meters up — and suddenly you’re looking down over Muong Hoa valley like you’re floating above it all. There’s this hush that settles in; I caught myself just standing there breathing it in.

By the time we wound down through Ta Van and Lao Chai villages toward Y Linh Ho, my legs were jelly but my head felt kind of clear — maybe from all that mountain air or just being so far from anything familiar. Our driver met us on some dusty road at the end (I never did figure out exactly where), smiling like he’d seen this tired look on plenty of faces before. It’s funny how quickly you start missing those slow evenings around a table with strangers who don’t feel like strangers anymore.
