The experience
The tour picks you up from your Sapa hotel at 1:00 PM and stops for lunch before heading down to Y Linh Ho, a Hmong village where the rice terraces run a hundred years deep. You walk through to Lao Chai for a break and views, then continue to Ta Van, where a Giay family welcomes you into their home for the night. Dinner happens in their kitchen. You cook alongside them, and the meal is part of the day, not a service.
Morning comes with a rooster or the pigs. Breakfast is pancakes and tea on the porch, looking out across the rice fields. After saying goodbye to the family, you trek through a bamboo forest and past a silk waterfall to Giang Ta Chai village. A picnic lunch breaks the walk. By early afternoon you're back on the main road, where a van picks you up and drives you back to Sapa town by around 2:00 PM. You shower at the hotel, then catch a shuttle to the bus office for your return to Hanoi. The tour includes sandwiches to take with you.
The group is either two or three people, so the villages see you as a small party, not a convoy. Your guide is from the region and speaks English or Vietnamese. Trekking entrance fees and the homestay are included. The only meals not covered are drinks and beverages beyond what the family serves.
