The experience
Sapa sits at the base of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, a nature reserve protecting over 100 varieties of orchids and populations of mountain goats and langur monkeys. The trek starts at 8:30 AM from Sapa Church or your hotel with a transfer to Tram Ton Pass, where the actual climb begins. Your guide introduces the route and the landscape changes you'll witness as elevation increases: cardamom plants at lower altitudes give way to giant pine trees, then expanses of yellow bamboo, and finally dwarf bamboo forest near the summit.
Day one is a six-hour push to 2,900 meters. You trek to 2,200 meters, stop for a picnic lunch, then continue climbing through the afternoon. Porters carry shared gear (three trekkers per porter), so you move with water, gloves, and support. By 3 PM you reach the camp, set up for the night, and eat dinner cooked on a campfire. The evening offers a clear night sky in a quiet forest with no noise or smoke.
Day two starts at 6 AM with breakfast, then the final 1.5-hour push to Fansipan Peak at 3,143 meters: the roof of Indochina. You have an hour at the summit to take photos and absorb the panoramic view of Hoang Lien National Park. The descent to 2,800 meters takes about an hour, followed by a picnic lunch. The walk back down to Tram Ton Pass is easier terrain, and your driver meets you there around 3 PM for the transfer back to Sapa town, where the tour ends by 3:30 PM. You receive a summiting certificate and can book onward transport to Hanoi or elsewhere that same afternoon.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the vegetation like at different altitudes on Mount Fansipan?
The Hoang Lien Son range shows distinct plant zones as you climb. Lower slopes have cardamom plants used by local communities; around 2,200 meters you encounter giant pine trees; higher up, expanses of yellow bamboo dominate; and near the 3,143-meter summit, dwarf bamboo forest marks the peak zone. The reserve protects over 100 orchid varieties across these zones.
Do I need to carry my own gear and supplies during the trek?
Porters carry shared equipment and supplies: three trekkers share one porter. You receive one large bottle of water per person and gloves. Meals (dinner on day one, breakfast and lunch on day two) are provided. Personal items and any extras you want to bring stay in your pack.
What time does the trek end on day two, and can I catch a bus back to Hanoi the same day?
The tour ends around 3:30 PM in Sapa town after the transfer back from Tram Ton Pass. This timing allows you to book an onward bus to Hanoi or another destination the same afternoon if you wish.
What wildlife might I see on the trek?
Mountain goats and langur monkeys inhabit the Hoang Lien Son range and may be spotted along the route. The nature reserve protects diverse animal and plant life, though sightings depend on timing and conditions during your trek.
Is there a cable car option for the descent on day two?
A cable car descent is available as an optional extra not included in the base tour price. You can arrange this at checkout if you prefer an alternative to trekking down.
