The experience
The tour starts at 9 am when your guide meets you at your hotel or the main church in Sapa town. Day one covers 15 km over 6.5 hours, dropping 2 km to Cat Cat village, crossing the hanging bridge over Muong Hoa river, then climbing through bamboo forest and past the biggest rice terraces in the area. You reach Y Linh Ho by midday and eat lunch cooked by a local Hmong family at their restaurant. That night you sleep in a homestay in one of the villages you've walked through.
Day two is shorter, 12 km in 5 hours, and takes you uphill to the waterfalls at Giang Ta Chai, where you enter Red Dao territory and visit a family to see how they live. You cross a second hanging bridge on the way back and eat lunch in Giang Ta Chai village. Days three and four move you deeper into the valley: Nam Tong on day three (where the Red Dzao are known for their red head scarves), then My Son village across buffalo trails with views of Hoang Lien National Park. Day four is an easier 6 km walk back to Ban Ho along the Muong Hoa River, with the chance to swim if weather allows. Transport back to Sapa town is included at the end.
Your guide speaks English or Vietnamese and stays with you throughout. Accommodation is a homestay each night. Water, village entry fees and meals at local family restaurants are included. The trek demands a moderate level of fitness (the first day is the longest and steepest), and is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy or poor cardiovascular health. Children from age 6 are welcome.

Is this one for you?The first day is a full 15 km over 6.5 hours with significant climbing, so you need moderate fitness and a willingness to walk at a steady pace for several hours. If you prefer shorter daily walks or easier terrain, the 2-day Sapa treks cover less ground and stay at lower elevations.
