The experience
You start in Sapa town and head straight into the winding O Quy Ho Pass, one of the four most scenic mountain passes in northern Vietnam. The road climbs through tea gardens and vegetable plots with views of the Hoang Lien Son range opening up as you gain altitude. From the summit you can see across the entire Muong Hoa Valley below, terraced rice fields spreading across the slopes in a patchwork of greens.
The first waterfall stop is Silver Waterfall, which drops more than 200 meters from an altitude of 1,800 meters. You walk a loop of about 1 kilometer up and down to reach it, passing cardamom trees and hearing the water long before you see it. The second stop is at Tram Ton Pass in Hoang Lien National Park, where a 2-kilometer walk along the Golden Stream leads to Love Waterfall, surrounded by forest and views of Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina.
After the passes, you ride down into Muong Hoa Valley and begin visiting villages: Sin Chai, Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai, Ta Van, Giang Ta Chai, Hau Thao and Su Pan. Lunch happens in Lao Chai with a Black Hmong family, eating dishes they prepare. You then spend about 30 minutes in their house, where the guide explains the customs, daily life and history of the people here. The rest of the afternoon is spent riding through more villages and terraced fields, stopping to photograph and walk through the landscape before returning to Sapa town.
