The experience

The tour starts at 9 am with pickup from your Sapa hotel or the main church. Your guide leads you down a short trail past cardamom trees into the small valleys where Black Hmong families live in traditional houses, and you'll meet the water buffalo, chickens and other animals they use for farming. The walk crosses rice terrace fields and mountain slopes toward Ma Tra village, where lunch happens at a small restaurant run by a Hmong family with views across the paddies.

After lunch, the trek continues to Ta Phin village, where you encounter both Black Hmong and Red Dao minorities. The Hmong are known for their marriage traditions. The Red Dao practice herbal medicine and use plants from the land to treat illness. You'll see women making brocade products by hand and visit Ta Phin Cave, which runs deep into the mountains. Transport back to Sapa is included when the tour ends.

The whole day runs about 5.5 hours of trekking and village time. You'll need at least a moderate level of fitness for the elevation and terrain. Children from age 7 are welcome.
