The Experience

The first thing I remember is the quiet shuffle of feet on damp stone as we left Sapa town behind. Our Hmong guide, Zizi’s cousin Mai, grinned and pointed out the clouds snagged on the hills — “they always get stuck here,” she said, and I sort of believed her. The air had that wet-leaf smell you only get early in the day. We’d handed off our bags for someone to take ahead (I still don’t know how they do it so fast), so it was just us, a few others, and Mai leading the way down toward Y Linh Ho.

I’d seen photos of these rice paddies before but actually walking between them is different — the mud pulls at your shoes and there’s this low hum from somewhere down in the valley, maybe a radio or someone laughing. Mai stopped now and then to show us wild mint growing along the edge; she crushed some between her fingers and let me smell it. We passed Lao Chai San, where two kids waved sticks at a buffalo that looked older than me. It’s not all picture-perfect — there are plastic wrappers here and there, but somehow it feels honest. The trek isn’t hard if you go slow, though I nearly slipped twice (Mai didn’t laugh… much).

Lunch was simple: sticky rice and pork wrapped in banana leaf, eaten cross-legged under a tin roof while rain tapped above us. Someone tried to ask about Hmong embroidery in Vietnamese — didn’t go well, but Mai just smiled and told us how her grandmother used to dye indigo cloth by hand. She pointed out where her family lived in Hau Thao village — honestly, you could see why people stay put here; everything feels close-knit even when you’re just passing through.

By late afternoon we reached Zizi Homestay. The house smelled like wood smoke and something sweet frying (turns out it was sticky rice cakes). If you stick around for dinner — which you should — everyone crowds into one room with bowls balanced on knees. Zizi’s uncle poured tea that tasted faintly grassy; someone played an old pop song on their phone. I still think about that view outside their window: green terraces fading into misty blue hills, voices drifting in from next door. You don’t really want to leave right away.
