You'll learn the history of Vietnamese coffee culture, then brew five signature styles using a traditional Phin filter—black coffee, white coffee with condensed milk, salt coffee, egg coffee, and coconut coffee. The class includes all brewing tools, herbal tea, and a cookie tasting. You leave knowing how to make each one at home, with an English-speaking instructor guiding you through the technique and the story behind each brew.
That small metal filter—the Phin—is the whole reason Vietnamese coffee tastes the way it does. It's not complicated, but it's not a drip machine either. You pour grounds into it, add hot water, and wait. The coffee comes down slow, thick, almost syrupy by the time it hits your cup. In this class in Hoi An, you'll start by learning why that matters, and why the French colonial era shaped the way Vietnam drinks coffee today. Your instructor walks through the history first—the cafés, the trade routes, the improvisation that led to condensed milk becoming the standard when fresh milk wasn't available. Then you make five different kinds.
The five coffees you'll brew are traditional black coffee, Vietnamese white coffee (which is really just black coffee with sweetened condensed milk), Hue Imperial salt coffee, Ha Noi egg coffee, and fresh coconut coffee. Each one uses the same Phin but changes the ratio or adds something unexpected—salt, egg yolk, coconut. You're not just following steps; you're learning the logic behind each one, so when you're home and want to recreate it, you know what you're doing. The class includes all the tools you need, plus herbal tea and a cookie while you taste what you've made. Everything's in English, and the space is wheelchair accessible if that matters for your group.
The whole thing takes a couple of hours, and you leave with the confidence to make these at home. That's the real difference between a class and a demo—you're not watching someone else do it. You're holding the Phin, pouring the water, waiting for that first drop, and tasting the result. It sticks with you.
Your class includes the Phin filter and all coffee-making tools, ingredients for five different brews, cold herbal tea, a salt cookie, and an English-speaking instructor who walks you through both the technique and the cultural history behind each coffee style.
