The experience
The tour starts with a ride through Dalat's pine forests to the organic coffee plantation, passing strawberry farms, green tea fields, and Buddhist flower greenhouses along the way. Once there, you'll head into a citrus farm to gather jungle vegetables, local chicken eggs, heirloom chilies and herbs. The ingredients your guides will use to prepare lunch. A short hike through the pines brings you to the coffee plantation itself, where you'll learn to identify and harvest the red ripe coffee cherries. The guides supply traditional Vietnamese hats, baskets and rubber boots for the work.
After harvesting, you move into the roasting process. Your guides teach you how locals ferment, sun-dry, hand-peel and hand-roast the famous Arabica coffee grown here, and you'll get access to the Golden Cherry Coffee unique to this region. You work through each step yourself. This is not a demonstration you watch, but a process you do. By the end, you'll have roasted beans you made from the cherries you picked that morning. Between the harvest and the roasting, you can swim or fish for trout in the local river, which the guides prepare as part of your lunch.
