The Experience
The day starts at an Iditarod dog sled kennel where you meet the team you'll run. These are working sled dogs—the same athletes that train year-round on the hilly woodland trails around Willow—and the mushing portion gives you two hours to learn how they're trained, get to know the pack, and feel their power as they pull you through the landscape they know. Playtime with the dogs is built in, so you're not just riding behind them.
After the morning on the trails, you break for lunch and snacks before the second half switches to ATV riding. You drive your own machine up into the Talkeetna Mountains toward Hatcher Pass, navigating rugged terrain and climbing to views that show Alaska across a wide horizon. The route includes stops for photos and the chance to pick wild berries if the season allows. All ATV gear is provided, and the ride runs three hours.
The combo format means you're operating equipment both times—mushing the dogs and piloting the ATV yourself—rather than watching from a passenger seat. A live guide in English stays with the group through both activities.
