Dinner, then three hours behind a dog team under moonlight

A 3-hour moonlit dog sled adventure in Willow, Alaska, where you arrive for a warm dinner by the campfire, meet both active sled dogs and retired companions, then drive a team through the Talkeetna Mountains under the starry sky. All winter gear and a live English-speaking guide are included; arrive 30 minutes early to settle in.

The Experience

You start the evening around a campfire with a hot meal, hearing stories from the trail before you meet the dogs. The team includes retired sled dogs greeting you on arrival and the energetic prime dogs ready to run—many have raced the Iditarod multiple times. Once you're outfitted for the cold, the guide introduces you to the dogs you'll be driving, and the real work begins: you take the reins and steer the sled into the Alaskan backcountry.

The three-hour run takes you over hills, through forests, and across frozen lakes under the moonlight. The Talkeetna Mountains open up around you, and the quiet of the night makes the only sound the runners cutting through snow and the dogs' breathing. You can stop along the way to photograph the landscape or just stand still in it. If you want to hand the reins to the guide for a stretch, that's an option too—but most people drive.

Winter gear covers you completely, so the cold stays outside your clothes. The guide stays with you the whole time, managing the team and the route. By the end of three hours, you've covered terrain most visitors to Alaska never see, and you've done it yourself, not watched it pass by.

Top questions

Can I actually drive the dog sled, or does the guide do it?

You drive the sled for the 3-hour run through the backcountry. The guide is there to manage the team and navigate the route, but the reins are in your hands. If you want to hand them over for part of the journey, you can.

What are the sled dogs like—are they all racing dogs?

The team includes both active sled dogs (many of which have competed in the Iditarod) and retired companions. You'll meet the retired dogs when you arrive, then work with the energetic prime team for the run. The guide shares their training and history as you go.

How cold is it, and what gear do I need to bring?

All essential winter gear—parkas, boots, gloves, hats—is provided and included. Willow in moonlight is well below freezing, but you'll be fully outfitted. Arrive 30 minutes early so the guide can make sure everything fits.

Is this safe for families with kids?

The adventure is suitable for all ages and all physical fitness levels. Kids ride in the sled while you drive, or you can arrange for them to drive if they're tall enough to reach the reins. The guide manages the pace and the terrain to keep everyone secure.

What happens if the weather is bad or the moon doesn't show up?

The tour runs in moonlight, but the Alaskan backcountry is navigable even on overcast nights. The guide knows the terrain and adjusts the route as needed. Winter weather is part of the experience—the cold and the quiet are what make it real.

How long is the whole experience, including dinner?

Plan for the evening from arrival through departure. Dinner and introductions take place before the 3-hour sled run, and you'll want 30 minutes to settle in and get outfitted. The total time is roughly four to four and a half hours.
